Land Reforms Commission (LRC) Director for the Batticaloa and Trincomalee Districts Wimalaraj Nesakumar was injured after being shot by two gunmen who arrived on a motorcycle while he was at his residence in Kaluthawalai yesterday (22 Feb) evening, Kaluwanchikudy Police said. Kaluthawalai is located about 30 km Southeast of Batticaloa.
Police said Mr Wimalraj was admitted to Kaluwanchikudy hospital and later transferred to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for further treatment. The suspects were yet to be identified.
It should be noted that Mr Wimalraj recently took acitioned to stop forcible land grabing by 'other' community in Tamil villages.
Near by residence said that they are shocked by this incident and requested the police to fastrack the investigation and punish the criminals. Enough is enough, and it is time for all Batticaloa Tamils to unite and safeguard our homeland, they added.
